ABC Action News (WFTS Tampa Bay) interviewed Tampa artist John Johnson today. John’s passion for music started in high school when he was the lead singer in a rock band but he soon realized that his talent was more in art than music. So, john took another direction. He went on to use his artistry to stay close to the music community by working with established and fledgling bands.
Many of you may not know John but you’ve certainly seen his work. He’s created artwork for Cheap Trick album covers. merch and even a guitar. Through a chance introduction to the band’s lead singer Robin Zander a decades long friendship ensued with the band. John has been the guest of Cheap Trick at a Liverpool Cavern Club show that was attended by only 200 people. John was once even invited by the band to join them on stage. Quite the thrill for a guy in high school whose aspiration was to sing like his idol Robin Zander.
It’s not only Cheap Trick. If you own any Greg Billings Band / Stranger CD’s or merch, it’s most likely John’s work you’re seeing. For decades John Johnson has been the go-to guy for his distinctive and imaginative artwork by the Tampa Bay music community. John’s generosity is legendary. He is always ready to help with any music fundraising efforts. John has pitched in with poster design and mech art for benefit shows from #BradyStrong to WMNF’s Led Zeppelin 50th Anniversary Concert at Jannus Live plus so many others.
The news piece aired on April 28th on ABC-TV Action News in the 3-5pm news broadcast.
