On the surface, this might seem like a “holiday themed concert” but looking a bit deeper it is so much more. It is the beautiful proof of an elder statesman of music that has found success, fearlessly showcasing the talents of not only his friends, but some of a younger generations’ finest musicians with no ego or competition hindering the presentation. Everyone was featured, even the backup band and it was well deserved. A top notch group overflowing with groove, dynamics and power. That takes balls, a sense of selflessness, and a genuine spirit of goodwill.
Hallelujah.

This show is first and foremost about music. Yes, it is entertainment, there are elements of comedy and variety reaching back to classic feel good kitsch-y showbiz from the days of yore, costume changes, top-notch production, crystal clear sound design, expert musicianship that stirs the soul – and Saxophones!
Right up my alley.

Say what you want about “smooth” jazz, but the fact remains. It attracts a crowd full of music lovers that have continuously and consistently shown up for music. Listening, watching and enjoying being swept away by the magic of the greatest of all art forms. Actually paying money for a musical experience. This cannot be said for a lot of other types of music nowadays. A packed house.
Hallelujah.

If there is hope for the future of music, and for the seemingly ailing and confused music business, sitting in this amazing venue amidst a happy sea of humanity for a sold out show is proof positive that Dave Koz is a purveyor of many types of hope indeed. People paid money to be here, and are paying attention for much longer than the span of a TikTok video.
Hallelujah again.

Christmas cheer abounds. Strangers are holding doors for each other, introducing themselves and comparing notes on shows they’ve attended, Dave Koz cruise highlights and favorite songs. A palpable sense of happiness, and joy is in the air, for a demographic that’s quite wide, spanning generations. Grand parents that were here some 27 years ago, with their kids, and their children’s kids. From collegiate to septuagenarians most dressed in their Sunday best, all smiling, the pre show chatter in this beautiful venue has a thread of positivity running through it. The excitement rippling through this cheerful crowd just before showtime really signals the start of the most wonderful time of the year. Music unites.
Hallelujah.

Now the show is beginning. I’m giddy with anticipation. From the first note of music, we are captivated and taken on a musical journey that is inspiring, joyous, and touching. This is not a band that plods through Christmas songs once a year, the arrangements are personalized and surprising. A lot of work has been spent on revamping these classic tunes and it has been time well spent. These classic pieces are treated with respect, but also reworked with new thrills for the audience. Every member of the cast did an absolutely fantastic job. “Youngsters” Guitarist Adam Hawley and Multi Instrumentalist Vincent Ingala held their own with masters Dave Koz and Jonathan Butler.
Rebecca Jade scats along effortlessly, keeping up with, and confidently challenging the boys, in their improvisational trade off battles – conjuring Ella Fitzgerald vibes and singing beautifully throughout the night. She is a world class talent.

When the other artists had their turns in the spotlight, Dave could not have looked any prouder. Absolutely beaming with pride, obviously a fan himself, watching and smiling along with the spectators. The night was so musically satisfying, there were four standing ovations throughout the evening, most notably for me, Jonathan Butler and Rebecca Jade‘s duet on “Mary did you know “. This was absolutely transcendent. Ruth Eckerd Hall is transformed from concert venue into a church. Also, Dave Koz’s absolutely stellar, solo rendition of White Christmas truly translated the spirit of the holidays.

With all of the pre requisite classic songs, mash ups, sing alongs, choreography, musical virtuosity, an Elvis appearance (Yes, Elvis), and overwhelming spirit, there were so many high points in this show I cannot name them all. I was enthralled throughout. Something for everyone. Dave Koz. A good guy and he proves it. A mention of the Starlight children’s charity further cements the spirit of the evening. This charity helps hospitalized children and this tour will generate funds for it.

The closing song, Leonard Cohen’s classic Hallelujah – with Mr. Koz singing the opening line unifies concertgoers and was the perfect closing for this inspiring occasion.

10 out of 10. Highly recommended. I will definitely be going again next year.
