The Thrash of the Titans Tour hit the St. Petersburg area on 1 April 2026 and delivered an absolute, relentless display of thrash metal power! I must admit that I’ve only heard of Testament but when a show like this comes to the area, you don’t say no to capturing it on camera. I was completely floored at just how many people packed into the Jannus Live venue…on a Wednesday night!!! I’ve been to Jannus many times and cannot recall a concert with that many people from start to finish. What really struck me was just how diverse the crowd was – from young to old and everything in between, you better believe, the metal scene is alive and well in the Tampa Bay area.
German thrash legends, Destruction, set the tone for the night with an explosively frenetic performance that immediately electrified the audience. As soon as their set began, the energy in the venue surged, spawning a mosh pit fueled by pent-up excitement and rage. The band’s original member, bassist and vocalist Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer, stood at the forefront, delivering heavy bass lines and menacing vocals that underscored Destruction’s status as one of the “Big Four” of German thrash metal. Drummer Randy Black’s relentless, high-speed tempo provided a powerful backbone to the performance, while guitarists Damir Eskic and Martin Furia contributed constant, unyielding riffs. Blazing through songs like “Death Trap” and “Thrash til death” this set kept the momentum alive and the mosh pit thriving, drawing an increasingly larger crowd as Destruction’s opening set progressed.
New Jersey powerhouse, Overkill, followed with a showcase performance led by legendary thrash metal frontman Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth. The tempo bumped up a couple notches, and the venue got a little rowdier with the pit expanding ever so slightly into a sea of raised, pumping fists. Overkill didn’t just step on that stage to play a set, they came to own the night with metal classics like ‘Scorched”, “Hello from the Gutter”, and “Ironbound”. Band members (Dave Linsk, lead guitar; Derek “The Skull” Tailer, guitar; Jeremie King, Drums; Christ Wolbers, bass [temp]) played hard and fast and showed why they are often called the “Motörhead of thrash metal”.
Finishing out the night was the legendary headliner – Testament. Hailing from California, Testament is widely considered one of the pioneers of the thrash metal scene. Having released 14 albums to date, several of those reaching Billboard music’s Top 100, Testament came to put on a clinic of thrash metal mayhem…and the crowd reciprocated!! The pit grew larger, with the inner turmoil becoming even more aggressive. Chuck Billy (lead singer) loomed over the audience and laid down heavy vocals that drew everyone closer to the edge of fury. The rest of the band (Eric Peterson, lead guitar; Alex Skolnick, lead guitar; Steve Di Giorgio, bass; Chris Dovas, drums) knew exactly how to play into the energy and provided the signature Testament sound that made them the kings of Thrash. The crowd came to let loose, and Testament provided the perfect final catalyst with songs like “Infanticide A.I.”, “Over the Wall” and “Shadow People”. It was the perfect kindling to an already volatile night of music – but in a good way!
I’m not political…at all; it makes me nauseated to even think of it! However, recent events being what they are combined with thrash metal’s roots in hardcore punk made the anti-establishment energy at the venue clear to me. For once, I understood it—especially after seeing the crowd feedback throughout the night. There is no better barometer of the human condition than the reaction to certain songs and genres of music. If the thrash metal scene proves anything, it’s that people are fed up with the system and sometimes the best medicine is to just let loose in the pit with a bunch of people who share the same disdain for the status quo.
Thrash metal may not be everyone’s bag. I get it! It’s fast, it’s chaotic, it will make your ears hurt…it’s not everyone’s cup of tea! If you missed this concert, however, you missed an amalgamation of our geopolitical climate. People came out to rage, but they raged in a good way, under the umbrella of some incredibly talented musicians!
